A Selection Of Variable Speed Motor Control

Variable Speed Motor Control is a general category having in it a variety of approaches.  Certainly, the current popular one for compact and efficient control is the VSD, or variable speed drive.  A stepper motor control could be seen as a variable speed motor control.  Despite this,  It also has some particular special features tending to placed it at least in a subclass, if not in a class of its own.  Another, also with distinct features, is the servo motor control.

The PWM motor control is known under a multitude of names but has in it a variety which also fall within the designation of VFD, or VSD.  True transformers also offer versions of Variable Speed Motor Controls.  Mentioned elsewhere several times already is the Variac.  Additional examples are the AC motor control, motor RPM control, and a number of others.  Tendency is to name them for the function most likely to be filled, so a wide selection of names exists. 

Variable Speed Motor Control Variac Transformer

The Variac is perhaps one of a limited number of types of true transformers that is a Variable Speed Motor Control.  Variacs are made with a toroid core and are very efficient.  Due to the innate efficiency they can be smaller than a standard laminated core transformer while yet performing much better.  They do not have the same problems with flux issues as laminated core transformers.  Mounting is often via a plate placed over the side and bolts passed through the corners so as to attach to a mounting on a panel or in a box.  Passing a mounting bolt through the center is avoided so as not to create unwanted magnetic effects.

 Because they are wired as autotransformers they do not provide any isolation.  Part of the windings are exposed and have no insulation so a slider can be used to move along the exposed windings. Thereby, a variable level of current only subject to positioning of the slider can be created.  This is why they fall into the category of Variable Speed Motor Controls.  They are quite often used in testing prototypes,  equipment being repaired, and in research where unusual electrical levels are being employed.  A Variac Variable Speed Motor Control is almost never expected to provide a source of controlled voltage indefinitely.

Variable Speed Motor Controls can be found in a multitude of worksites, manufacturing locations, businesses, private homes and basically, nearly anywhere motors are used.  They are used equally as effectively with DC as with AC motors.  They may be medium voltage or  low voltage (between 110 V and 600V), or even at ultra low voltages of 6, 12 16, 24, 32, or 48 volts and other levels.  They may be portable, mounted as single units, in panels, boxes or as part of a whole motor control center.  They are especially popular in current use because they can save large percentages of energy and this, in turn, is reflected in the power bills the user pays.  Governments are happy about this as it reduces stress on infrastructures.  It also allows planning to delay the immediacy of beefing up grid systems.
