The Importance Of Torque Motor Control

Torque Motor Control provides an important feature in use of motors throughout the application of motor technologies.  Speed is not the only issue when coupling a motor to a specific machine.  Often it is critical that torque is maintained regardless of speed or variation in speed.  An average VSD drive does not guarantee any ability to affect torque in a useful way.  Torque Motor Controls specialize in designs that will affect torque in motors.  Motors also have to be designed and built for torque control. 

Torque Motor Control Development

First off, it must be pointed out that variations of Torque Motor Control are designed for either DC or AC motors.  The motors, themselves, often are sold with their matching drive control.   Torque and speed are, to a great degree, always interrelated.  When one is controlled, the other is also affected.  But not until the development of certain VFD drive advances were Torque Motor Controls available that would accurately control torque. 

Actually, Torque Motor Control is evolved from the urge to emulate certain desirable DC motor characteristics, but by using the far more service-free and economical AC motors.  Because they do not use brushes AC motors are simpler in design, economical to produce, small, inexpensive to make, and need little maintenance.  In a DC motor torque control is simple and direct.  The stator field is always perpendicular to the armature winding field.  This field orientation is necessary for generation of maximum torque. 

Torque Motor Control Variations

The usual variable speed drive controls frequency and voltage in order to affect speed.  This is done through PWM (pulse width modulation.)  With no feedback loop or electronic application of a special algorithm, it would not constitute a Torque Motor Control.  This is called an open loop drive.   In applications not demanding a fine control of torque, as in fans and pumps, this is not an issue. 

A variation of the common variable frequency drive uses monitoring of the electrical and magnetic aspects of the motor to match actual conditions with ideal conditions established for that motor.  Corrections are made continuously as data comes in and the motor is readjusted.  Because there is no positional feedback device on the shaft it is called a sensorless vector control.

An option called the vector VFD drive was developed as one approach to more precise control of torque.  The angular position of the rotor flux must be known in order to emulate the more simple DC motor torque advantage.  Sensors are placed on the shaft and connected by a wire to an electronic motor drive.  By using the positional data recovered by these sensors the drive can be adjusted to match the rotor and stator fields and recreate the optimum field orientation for best torque results.  This is called a closed-loop drive.

Direct torque control is a newer and vastly more efficient form of Torque Motor Control.  Rather than having sensors and devices to indirectly manage the torque, a DTC system cuts to the chase and controls the actual torque and flux.  By controlling these factors directly, earlier methods using modulators and sensors are surpassed in speed and drive response while also doing away with the sensors or feedback devices. 

DC Torque Motor Control Options

Stepper motors are DC and have the advantage of the direct control of the spatial filed relationship as described above.  Torque is strong; if the windings have been energized it will be at 100% torque while at standstill.
