Call us today at 510-490-2187. Stepper Motor ControlThe Stepper Motor Compared With Other MotorsStepper Motor Control is based on a specific type of motor known as the stepper motor, or step motor. They are brushless and synchronous. They are brushless because there is no wound armature to require energizing the armature. They are synchronous because their rotor poles move at the same speed to each other. An electromagnetic DC field excites the rotor. The stepper motor may have a rotor of common metal and depends on variable reluctance where minimum reluctance equals minimum gap. A stepper may use a fixed magnet rotor where that alternative operates on the basis of magnetic attraction and repulsion between the rotor and the electromagnets. A third option is where a hybrid of both approaches may be used. A stepper motor design is a reversal of the common version of the common DC motor where there are fixed magnets positioned around an energized armature. That type of motor requires brush contacts to carry current to the armature. Stepper motor Control relies on the design of the stepper motor. The rotor of that motor is toothed and never energized. The electromagnets placed around the rotor are energized and are also toothed. When any one of the electromagnets is energized it causes the teeth to be magnetized on the electromagnetic side and the teeth on both magnet and rotor will tend to line up. The consecutive electromagnets (and their teeth's) relative positions are deliberately off, so a magnet aligning one toothed portion will automatically throw out the alignment of the next magnet and its teeth. The magnets are sequentially charged so as to move the rotor in measured portions of a full circle. This way, the Stepper Motor Control arrives at a precise motion without resorting to a feedback mechanism of any kind. Stepper Motor ControlThe Stepper Motor & EfficiencyStepper motor Controls are as precisely accurate as the size and quantities of teeth on the rotor and the electromagnets that determine the magnitude of movement. Number of electromagnets is another factor. Accuracy will also depend on the capabilities given the Stepper Motor Control mechanism. These capabilities are reasonably able in surpassing those of the mechanical aspects of the motors they control. There is little possibility, therefore, that the motor control will inhibit motor efficiency. The Stepper Motor Control can thereby be as accurate as desired, and therefore, also very efficient in its motions. Stepper Motor ControlThe Stepper Motor LiabilitiesA Stepper Motor Control does have drawbacks. The main one is that the rapid movement from one magnet to another can bring about a roughness in motion that can be radical at certain speeds. This is sometimes mitigated by quickly accelerating through those ranges. Two other options are use of a micro-stepping driver or by damping the system physically. (A micro-stepping motor would break up the movement into many much smaller increments. This would tend to reduce the tendency of jerky motions resulting in "rough points" in rotation at certain speeds.) Torque loss, another drawback, is experienced at increased speeds. Balancing drive voltage against use of current limiting drivers can improve torque. Stepper Motor ControlThe Stepper Motor Wiring OptionsThe usual stepper is open-loop; there is no feedback indicating location or position of the rotor. The load or inertia may result in carrying the rotor past or failing to arrive at an optimum point before energization. This creates the need to overbuild a stepper motor so it will not lose steps. One option to this is using a servo motor with a servo motor control. A closed loop system is now offered which reports on the exact rotor position and allows increased efficiency in applying energization. This prevents losses of steps through variation in load or high load inertias. The motors in a two phase stepper motor may also be either unipolar or bipolar. In a unipolar motor there will be two windings in each phase. Each one is dedicated to one magnetic field direction. The magnetic pole can be reversed with no change in current direction. This simplifies wiring and number of leads. In the bipolar motor there is a single winding in each phase. This requires the driving circuit to be more complex so it can be reversed. Each phase requires two leads with none in common. An 8-lead stepper can additionally be used with either unipolar, series or parallel windings, giving a variation in choice of inductance, current levels, performance torque or speed.
