Servo Motor Control–The Motor Wiring  The pot is the key to the fine adjustment and unique usefulness of a servo and the Servo Motor Control.  A resistor-capacitor circuit is wired to the pot via the capacitor.  By pulsing the R-C circuit the motor is caused to move.  As the motor turns resistance in the R-C circuit is changed and again energizes the motor.  A range in position from 0 to 180 degrees in the motor can be achieved by pulsing the R-C circuit. Servo Motor Control is achieved via three wires to the motor where most motors only rely on two.  The third wire allows digitally setting the servo position.  The other two are ground and power.  The servo motor does not require polarity reversal of the power terminals to be able to reverse directions.  Servo Motor Control–Peculiarities Of Pulse Usage A peculiar application of pulses establishes Servo Motor Control.  Rotational progress depends on pulse width.  For instance, one width will produce a turn to 0 degrees.  Another pulse width accomplishes a turn to 180 degrees.  Even when not turning, the motor must continue receiving a pulse of the same width to maintain its position for proper Servo Motor Control.  Servo Motor Control–Servo Function The main point behind Servo Motor Control, or servo drive, and servo motors is to provide a motor that can maintain an angular position which can then be changed at will.  When in the correct position, as determined through the pot feedback, the motor turns off.  Adjustment of the Servo Motor Control will result in reactivation of the motor.  Servos generally are not expected to go beyond 180 degrees and, in fact, usually have stops placed on the main output gear to prevent movement past that point.  A servo needing to adjust simply activates and turns in the correct direction at which point it will stop (as long as it continues to receive the exact same signal.)  When instructed by the Servo Motor Control to travel a greater distance the motor will turn faster.  This is because power applied is proportional to distance of travel required.
