PWM Motor Control Description
PWM Motor Control is accomplished when
pulse width modulation is used to regulate a current transmitted to a
motor. The PWM Motor Control emits a current that is
smoother and at a higher switching frequency. The advantage to
this is that it is inaudible to humans. This eliminates any hum
otherwise heard at lower frequencies. One exception is that some
controllers for models that are radio controlled deliberately produce
audible sound as beeps.
PMW Motor controllers generally include
one large reservoir capacitor and switching elements (thyristors,
transistors or Mosfets) in an H-bridge configuration. An H-bridge
allows voltage to be moved across a load either direction. The
term comes from the graphic diagram of such a circuit where it appears
like an "H". They may be assembled from separate parts or
produced as integrated circuits. A common use is in robotics
where DC motors may run forward or backward. An H-bridge may also
be used in braking a motor.
A PWM Motor Control Creates A Sine Wave Pattern
PMW Motor Controls as in the
drive, use a series of pulses at the same amplitude, but varying
width, to create an artificial sine-wave pattern. This pattern of
electrical power is then used in AC motors to drive the motor just as
if it were generated from a normal AC source. The sine waves
result from the combination of the action of producing the varying
width pulses and their resulting influence in creation of electrical
flux in the motor. The flux does not instantly dissipate and
tends to resist change, so the pulses from a PMW Motor Control
are "rounded off" into the sine pattern. Further conditioning is
usually done by employing capacitors to enhance the smoothing of the

with DC motors.
In this case the duration of the pulses is directly proportional to the
DC voltage value. The supply voltage determines the speed of the
motor. By controlling the duration of pulses the actual voltage
received can be raised or lowered. If the pulses are delivered
fast enough, the motor will not seem to register the fact that the
pulses are not continuous. The motor will only turn as fast as
the proportion of the actual voltage in relation to maximum voltage.
If voltage is 6V a 12V motor will turn at half speed. It is an
extremely efficient circuit as almost none of the power will be lost in
