What IS A PID Motor Control?
A PID Motor Control is a widely used
industrial
motor controller. PID stands for proportional integral
controller. It is a feedback mechanism with a control loop. As a
PID Motor Control it is intended to measure the difference in an
optimum set point and the variability shown in a process. Then it is to
calculate and put out a correction to offset and minimize any errors.
The Application of the PID Motor Control
Algorithm
An algorithm is a finite set of instructions
whose application in this case would result in completed PID Motor
Control tasks. Calculations within given parameters are made
and the answer is expected to correct errors in motor operations.
Data is collected according to three separate parameters.
The first is the proportional; whatever varies in
proportion to another thing that varies. Say, something is going
one inch to the left for every five inches forward.
The Second is the integral; a calculus function
representing an area bounded by its graph. This would be, for
example, the entire contained area of the top half of a sine wave from
base line up to the sine curve.
The third is the derivative. It is
another calculus function. Loosely speaking, it measures the
magnitude of change in a quantity at a certain point. For
instance, the velocity of a car taken at certain points along its path
are derivatives. Velocity is a magnitude of change measured
against time. If you want it to go gradually slower until it
stopped you would have to make the rate of change diminish and target a
point at which it should come to rest.
If you are at all confused by the above, just
boil it down to realize that the parameters deal with areas,
velocities, and relative motions. All these are definitely part
of any effort for controlling motion and are applicable to a PID
Motor Control.
By comparing the total of the three above, a
calculation can be made as to ideal against the real and give a series
of quantities with which to adjust for correction with the PID Motor
Control.
PID Motor Control Operational Parameters
While the above gave the general concepts used in
a PID Motor Control, a few things are left unexplained. A
key one is that changes for correction purposes too quickly introduced
into one or more of the three parameters can easily be overdone.
This will result in oscillations in the activity that never settle on
the correct optimum points. The PID Motor Control must be
properly set up or calibrated so as to allow gradual stabilizing into
desirable motions and operations. Overcompensation is probably
the biggest concern with setting one of these
motor
controls up correctly.
PID Motor Control & The Self-Correcting Feature
This is definitely one motor control apart from
the rest. This aspect of self correction demands good calibration
and adjustment. Resulting corrections must be within a reasonable
sphere of error. A PID Motor Control is not sentient, so
must entirely depend on whomever sets it up. One must do so with
it in mind to allow for gradual stabilization at an optimum instead of
trying to go for it all at once and then be perpetually overshooting
the mark.
