Current State of Motor Speed Control

Motor Speed Control is done nowadays from a variety of approaches.  There have been significant advancement in transformer technologies and in solid-state electronics.  This has opened the door for a whole selection of previously unavailable avenues in Motor Speed Control. 

Historic Approaches To Motor Speed Control

Before the early 1800's rheostats were used in the armature circuit in combination with centrifugal governors to automatically maintain (DC) motor speed under varying loads.  They functioned only to interrupt a circuit when a motor went too fast.  Several versions of this philosophy of Motor Speed Control were suggested where current was only supplied a part of each revolution.  Some attempts were designed to move brushes from contact with armature when speeds passed optimum; the governor mechanically moving them.  They all became obsolete with the introduction of new motor designs. 

Brush shifting was limited in usefulness due to narrow range of speed available.  Armature rheostats allowed only poor regulation.  Changing field reluctance was experimented with to little success.  Shifting the balance of metal in a yoke, changes in air gap, and attempts to use movable iron cores all failed to prove practical.   Focus went to variable voltage ideas.  Three Motor Speed Control versions tried were motor/generator types, multiple supply voltages, and boost and retard systems. 

By 1900 attention shifted to the increasing development of AC motors.  The Variac, first patented in 1934, is one of the oldest successful of the AC electric versions of Motor Speed Control still in use today.

The simplicity of the Variac Motor Speed Control is unquestionably part of its success.  It is essentially a single coil autotransformer with a variable slider or rheostat-like action that allows variable control.  Its capabilities are appreciated in testing and experimental activities.  It is also very efficient and compact and is a great form of control panel transformer.

Here is where Motor Speed Control has come into its own.  Use of electronics in VFD drives has produced the opportunity to pretty much customize motor speeds and other attributes of motor operation.  Variations allow closely monitoring and adjusting to make full use of torque.  This is the vector drive.

Motor Speed Control is not always about variability.  Rather, it is often of great benefit to supply very predictable and constant exact voltage.  Where stresses inherent in starting and stopping motors require special consideration and the lowering of a higher voltage to a lower desired voltage is also necessary, the control transformer may be just the thing.  There are several variations and uses besides for motors, but all will be capable of withstanding the high inrush currents resulting from powering up a motor.  They are built with the capacity to maintain a predictable constant load voltage despite varying supply voltage.  This allows use of solenoids and other electromagnetic devices and switches sensitive to voltage changes.  They will also insure isolation of primary power supply from secondary load for safety and damage prevention.
