Motor RPM Control Facts

Motor RPM Control is another view of the motor controller and VFD drive technology.  Previous articles have referred to the variable speed aspect.  However, it must be stressed that specific RPM is also a control feature.  Saying that variable speed is achieved tends to be general and does not specify that there might be a target RPM which is being met.  Motor RPM Controls are really there to provide exact RPMs for specific utility.

Motor RPM Control & Application

Motor RPM Control establishes a certain speed.  This is the RPM and may or may not be the actual final target.  In some speed settings the result may be a number of cubic feet of air in a given time, as in HVAC systems.  In VFD pump systems the actual target may be a volume of fluid, like so many gallons per second or minute.  In machining operations, RPM is often the actual target and is determined by an optimum speed at which machining does its best job for existing circumstances.  The Motor RPM Control will allow adjustability in all cases so whatever final result is desired can be achieved. 

Motor RPM Control & The Motor

What if Motor RPM Control is applied to a universal motor?  (A universal motor is defined as series-wound, capable of operating at either 50 or 60 Hz AC or DC.)  Under no load, speed is highest under no load.  Torque is greatest under lowest speed.  This relationship of speed and torque means loads can affect speed.  Use of a universal motor is not prudent when expected service under a constant speed. 

Motor RPM Control & Torque Control

Motor RPM Controls usually have motors which are specifically designed to match their use.  One form of variable speed drive addresses the problems of torque by providing sensors on the shaft which monitor the phase positions.  Through this and an adjustment of position, torque can be controlled.  A second version has no sensors, but measures the power characteristics of the motor.  It then adjusts the real characteristics to match as closely as possible to the ideal characteristics.  This way the motor reaches optimal conditions of speed and torque.  Remember, we are speaking now of torque as lack of sufficient torque will allow the motor speed to be affected under loads.  The Motor RPM Control may sometimes use a vector drive to help maintain a true RPM. ( But a vector drive is often focused on torque despite RPM.  A good vector drive and motor can maintain 100% torque even with no RPMs.)

Motor RPM Control & Constant Speed Motors

A range of DC motors exists which are great at maintaining constant speed.  A Motor RPM Control coupled with one of these can supply variable speeds which can be set to accurate RPMs.  These are brushless motors and, being brushless, do not have the servicing liabilities of the brushed DC motors (which are also used for constant speed applications.)
