The Sphere Of Motor Control Stations

Motor Control Stations may be confused with motor control centers which sometimes combine features.  There are two main points to the Motor Control Station.  First, they provide a point for local or remote control of the motor.  Second, they allow these controls to be accomplished via lower amperage connections.  Such connections are cheaper to install and operate and are safer for machinery and personnel.  In fact, once one is using the larger motors, the wires required are so large as to be prohibitive for simple control use. 

The primary thing to remember is that a Motor Control Station is a set of switches for the operation of the motor.  Many will be stop and start functions, but there may be speed controls and other functions as well.  The Motor Control Station may not be in the same area or unit as the actual motor speed control.  Usually, a variable speed drive will have a Motor Control Station functioning as part of its panel, but remote stations are also offered for use in conjunction with them.  A remote panel can be directly wired or use an RF connection. 

Motor Control Station Locations

It is highly common to see pendant Motor Control Stations when dealing with equipment such as cranes and hoists.  These are usually very simple and offer few variables.  Simple, or more complex controls can occur, which may be wall-mounted or panel-mounted on or near equipment.  You see this on machines, such as planers, mills, lathes, and other tools that have basic functions to perform.  And yet, a CNC Motor Control may also have a Motor Control Station on the actual machine that provides more complex capabilities. 

Motor Control Stations can be installed at fixed control points where an operator is expected to manually control several different motors and motor-driven equipment.  While the drives may be placed there, or separately in a motor control center, motor control cabinet, or at some other point, all the controls necessary for manual operation or for programming of operations may be in a single Motor Control Station.

Motor Control Station Examples

Motor Control Stations can be as simple as the open/close switch on a remote garage door opener.  They may be as complex as the electronic controls to direct the numerous saws and saw arms in a sawmill where boards are trimmed.  The remotely operated vehicles (ROV) as found in undersea and space exploration and in military or police use also employ them.  The elite hobbyist with remote controls on powered craft use them.  The PC motor control is another example.  Robots often use the Stepper Motor Control, the Servo Motor Control, and in cases of controllable, steerable ROVs, the Dual Motor Control.  In each situation, they will be handled from a Motor Control Station.

Recognizable Motor Control Station Features

The features one may usually expect will be such things as push-buttons,  push/pull switches,  rocker switches, joy sticks, levers and dial arms or knobs.  Other forms of switches may include coin, key, or wobble sticks (where a wobble stick is a lever-type switch operable from any direction.)  There may or may not be meters accompanying them.  There may also be audible notice and warning systems built in.  One usually sees name plates or decals delineating the use of each item.  There can also be any number of indicator lights.
