The Motor Control Centers & The Role Of The
Plant Engineer
Motor Control Centers Centers have become
one of today's primary answers to the constant search by manufacturers
to streamline processes, bring up productivity and boost profit
margins. The job of plant engineer becomes increasingly vital in
the highly changing and competitive scenarios found today. His
role now includes such things as finding control solutions and getting
them up and running. His objective will be reduction of costs,
time savings, and facilitating information exchange within the
automated systems. Within a confusing variety of available
technological products, overlooking new Motor Control Centers
can be easy, but costly.
The New Motor Control Centers
Initial forms of Motor Control Centers
traditionally incorporated
motor control
panels made up mainly of mechanical/electrical components and
connections that were hardwired. Certainly, such features remain
a large part of the motor Control Centers they are part of.
However, recent advances have introduced more highly
intelligent motor control and
motor
control applications that can be programmed to do more than simply
turn electric motors
and machines on and off. Monitoring functions abound; motor
current, thermal capacity, timing, coordination, etc. The are
capable of sophisticated diagnostics and troubleshooting.
New Motor Control Centers Address Previous
Deficiencies
The new Motor Control Centers also answer
certain other inefficiencies that networks of devices can create in the
areas of configuration and data management. These inefficiencies
can include insufficient flexibility and reliability when addressing
addition of new units. It may also include times when
daisy-chaining of devices can result in equipment down line incurring
service interruptions as a result of one device up line failing
momentarily or permanently. Shutting down of equipment and
operations may ensue as a result. Other potential problems are
damages to exposed lines and cables incurred in wireways when pulling
additional cables. And prior to the advent of digital data
streams and reporting systems, problems in consolidating and organizing
motor control information into a plant control system was a nightmare.
Sorting out the volumes of data for specific useable information on the
network could be horrendous. Good modern Motor Control Centers
address these considerations.
Motor Control Centers Are Integrated Units
Integration is of three factors; hardware,
software, and communications. Today's versions of Motor
Control Centers are often deliberate in implementing a harmonized
design made up of these elements. The integrated systems now
available provide much of the pre-testing, wiring and installation
prior to shipment from the factory. This reduces installation
time tremendously and insures increased compatibility and correct
inter-wiring of components. "Pre-configured" is a term that
summarizes a great deal of what has changed about Motor Control
Centers. Screens, setting and many other factors are fed into
the mechanisms involved before ever reaching the installation site.
Motor Control Centers & Additional Design
Advantages
The devices coming out today often have several
additional improvements in features. Lines are isolated by
barriers, avoiding potential installation damages. They have
easy-connect ports, allowing quick and easy installation of individual
units, connections, relocations and additions of new features.
This also avoids interruptions inherent in servicing daisy-chained
units. Connectivity and software allows for digital documentation
of operations, faults, changes, etc. that may otherwise not be
recorded, and also allows viewing and access to schematics, diagrams,
information and data required to operate or diagnose and troubleshoot
on the spot and coincidentally with operation.
Additional safety is provided in that inspections
of hardware can be done remotely via computerized accesses and
monitoring devices. Equipment and personnel are less exposed to
each other and to possible electrical shorting and inadvertent manual
interruptions.
