The Scope Of Motor Control Centers

A Motor Control Center is made up of an assembly of one or many enclosed sections incorporating a common bus for power, along with motor control devices and their accouterments.  They are popular in modern factories where several machines demand separate controllers and/or drives.  Motor Control Centers are often used for low voltage installations (230-600V), but may also be found in application with motors running from 2300V to 15000V.  The medium voltage versions achieve switching through use of vacuum contactors and maintain separate power switching and control compartments.  These Motor Control Centers often include VFD drives, metering, programmable controllers, and may also be combined with the building's electrical service entrance.

Motor Control Center Application

Motor Control Centers are installed wherever there are large numbers of motors in use.  The auto industry was one of the first to use them, starting as early as 1950.  Assembly plants, processing plants, mills, bottling companies, complex pumping stations, and operations using a multitude of conveyers and other motor-driven devices, lifts, and hoists will be seen to have Motor Control Centers.  These centers may be found on the floor of factories near the machinery they control.  However, when applied in areas with corrosive or dusty atmospheres are involved, they may be in a dedicated and air-conditioned room. 

Motor Control Center Particulars

In a Motor Control Center, one may find one or many sections of (often vertical) metal cabinets.  There will be a power bus, and places on which to plug-in mount single motor controllers.  Smaller units may be simply plugged in, but it is usually necessary to bolt in the larger and heavier controllers.  The unpluggable units can be demounted for testing, maintenance and repair.  There will be contactors paired with each controller, or solid-state controllers in more modern installations. 

In Motor Control Centers, prevention and protection is a major concern.  Relays are included to protect motors from overloads.  Short-circuit protection is provided for via fuses or circuit breakers.  Disconnecting switches and switchgear allow for isolation of motor circuits.  Cables penetrating walls and fire-rated floors may include mandatory firestops. 

Wire ways are provided for power cables and field control.  Motors and controllers are wired via terminals in the controller.  Each controller receives 3 phase power through separable connectors.  MCCs may be pre-wired (minus field wiring) for easy installation.  They may instead have been engineered to include internal control with interlocking wiring connecting a programmable controller or central control panel.
