A Motor Control Cabinet in use is more and more prevalent and desirable in modern electrical power manipulation.  This is partly due to the increased popularity in special power controls for a variety of purposes.  Convenience is one factor.   It is also directly attributable to the need for safety and better isolation of dangerous and sensitive elements from exposure to personnel and environmental factors.  Government also has its say in setting standards requiring safety enclosures.  Motor Control Cabinets meet these and other requirements in use of a variety of power products.

The designer and installer of any applications of Motor Control Cabinets should both be cognizant of national and local requirements since they may differ according to Local city, county, state, national and specific industry requirements.  There may also be specific agencies which will be involved depending on who owns or employs the site and for what purpose it is applied.

Motor Control Cabinet Variations & Locations

The typical Motor Control Cabinet is often found in at least three situations.

There may be an enclosure on or in the machine, itself, for the motor control.  This can, in some instances, be on or in the manual control panel.  In this case we are usually talking about a single dedicated micro- or mini-controller with little of the extra paraphernalia accompanying larger and more complex operations. 

There may be a dedicated, but separate, Motor Control Cabinet mounted near the machine it controls, or at least within a part of the same building reasonably nearby.  Usually, they will be within no more than 50 feet to avoid voltage drop situations and electronic noise in the long cable leads, unless specifically accounted for in the installation of additional measures to mitigate such drops.

Larger installations use a number of manufacturing or industrial equipment functions employing a variety of motors.  The Motor Control Cabinet in such a situation will be a motor control center.  In this case, motor control centers provide secure spaces and attributes necessary for each and every motor control and other related equipment.  They are designed for all items to be successfully and legally installed in conformation with existing codes and requirements.

Additionally, as remote installations may not have buildings nearby, some cabinets are weatherproof and designed to be outdoors. 

Motor Control Cabinet Materials

While cabinets, when painted, often look alike, there are some basic differences one must take into account in specific circumstances.  These are not complex, but can be critical for a reliable and long-lasting installation.  Specifically, the common cold-rolled steel cabinets usually acceptable must be replaced with either a stainless steel or aluminum model capable of resisting things like extremes from salt water spray to corrosive chemical fumes.  Some dusts, granules and powders are also corrosive and must be prevented from affecting the base material of the cabinet or the devices and connections contained within.  Other materials are now making their way into specialized areas.  These are forms of special plastics, fiberglass and other composites.
