The Inverter Motor Control

Inverter Motor Control is arrived at by using an electronic device to convert DC current to AC for powering a motor.  By varying the voltage and the frequency, speed of motors becomes highly controllable.  The DC used may be derived from an AC current that is converted as part of the electronic process.  It may also come from batteries or solar panels.  The term "inverter" comes from the early practice with AC to DC mechanical converters being reversed to convert DC to AC–thus inverting their use.  These Inverter Motor Controls are often used in systems made up of AC power distribution generators, power transformers, control circuits and switches.

Inverter Motor Control & The Oscillator

Inverter Motor Control depends on the use of an oscillator.  This is simply a waveform generator which creates sine waves with fixed amplitude and frequency.  All variable frequency drives utilize this process.  Generally, the format is to use an electronic amplifier which feeds through an electronic filter.  This routes the signal back into the amplifier input.  This is known as a feedback loop.  A newly powered amp puts out what is considered noise.  Noise in this sense is an electrical flow with undesirable wave form characteristics.  By use of the feedback loop the signal is repeatedly circulated through the amp and filter with the result of smoothing the wave to a more desirable form.  Around a dozen forms of oscillation formats exist, as well as numerous filtering options.  All may be used in creation of an Inverter Motor Control.

Inverter Motor Control & The IGBT

Another electronic part used in Inverter Motor Controls is the IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor).  Because of its capacity to switch on and off quite rapidly it is ideal in use with PMW (pulse width modulation).  PMW is an essential part of creating sine wave current from DC current for use in Inverter Motor Controls.  They are now easily available and highly economical.  Newer generations have pulse ratings that are extremely high, which makes them in high demand for other applications where large power pulses are desirable.  Experimental and scientific research and application in plasma and particle physics are examples.

While some forms of Inverter Motor Controls may be able to power a generic AC motor, it really is desirable to use them with motors with circuitry and architecture matched to it use.  Inverters create rapid temperature rises which may cause failure in insulation within the motor.  Special wire may be used in motors.  The insulation system should be designed to accommodate the increased stresses, as well.  They should also have insulated bearings and a grounding brush on the shaft.  A motor-to-drivecase ground-strap is part of this strategy.  These measures protect the motor from high frequency currents that are often generated within these motors which can mar bearing surfaces and create nasty shocks to personnel and equipment.
