Modern Induction Motor Control
Induction Motor Control is now replacing
older uses of
DC motors. In the past such motors were preferred for their
ease of control. However, advances in solid-state electronics has
made it possible to achieve good Induction Motor Control with
little trouble. Pulse width modulation (PWM) can now achieve fine
adjustments in voltage and frequency which allows very good motor
control characteristics. This has made them preferable to the
traditional DC motors for several reasons.
Induction Motor Control AdvantagesComparison of
DC to AC Motors
The disadvantages of DC motors include two key
items. One is that industrial applications of DC motors entails
overhauling the brushes and rotor windings periodically. Second,
because the DC motor rotor windings are inside the motor, cooling
becomes a much bigger issue. The lack of brushes in an
AC induction
motor and a much simpler rotor design give the induction motor a
great advantage. The rotor has no windings, but is constructed of
a magnetic steel laminations. This makes it much more tolerant of
heat. These features make them more durable. Only the rotor
bearings may need servicing. Coupled with the new Induction
Motor Control, they become an easy choice.
Induction Motor Control & Variable Speed
Induction Motor Control with
variable
speed control is very simple in concept. It simply requires
alteration of frequency and amplitude to adjust motor speed.
Earlier variations of Induction Motor Control was achieved by use of of
a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR). But these created a much
rougher sine wave form that was not desirable due to high harmonics and
poor performance at low frequencies. The subsequent development
of the PMW Induction Motor Control that uses MOSFET (metal
oxide semiconductor field effect transistor) or IGBT (insulated gate
bipolar transistor) technology has resolved these issues.
Induction Motor Control Phase
Induction Motor Control can be set up to
handle single or 3 phase motors. The technology is primarily the
same for either, but, of course, the circuitry of the inverter used for
3 phase has to now accommodate three circuits instead of one, and also
coordinate the phases. This ability to apply also to
3 phase motor
control makes Induction Motor Control a fully viable method
for industrial and heavy motor applications since so many of them are 3
phase. It is even possible to purchase medium voltage
Induction Motor Control units for especially higher voltage
applications.
TEMCo's Philosophy
Our team at TEMCo has developed the ideal program
