Basics of Electric Motor Control

Electric Motor Control is founded on the basics of how electric motors work.  An electric motor operates because two magnetic fields in proximity react on each other.  These fields are employed to create torque.  Torque is a force whose tendency is to cause rotation.  (Note that some stepper motors are not based exactly on that fundamental.  They do, however, operate on the more basic action of at least one magnetic field acting on iron or steel.) 

There are numerous kinds and approaches of electric motors.  Proper choice and application of these fall into the field of motion engineering.  Also within this field is the subfield of Electric Motor Control.  This includes the art and science of precision velocity, torque and position of a mechanical drive.  Certain variations of motors will supply specific Electric Motor Control capabilities applicable only to specific motor control activities.
