What Is CNC Motor Control?
CNC Motor Control is an application of
computer numerical control (CNC) in which automation is
programmable and is managed through use of microcomputers directed by
mathematical data to perform a variety of machining operations.
The typical CNC Motor Control is a version of
VFD drive.
They can often be made for use with versions of DC motors as well as AC
motors.
Stepper
Motor Controls are very commonly used in circumstances that also
make them CNC Motor Controls. The same holds true for
Servo Motor Controls. They consequently can fall under the
more general headings of PWM Motor Control,
Industrial Motor Control
and PC Motor Control.

the successful completion of any work done via CNC Motor Control.

The design stage The thought process of
planning and outlining what is to be built.
Computer Aided Design (CAD) This is the
process of converting the above thoughts into computer language,
usually through special CAD graphics programs that allow the final
design to be viewed on a computer screen.
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Here
is found the conversion of the design to machine language allowing a
machine to execute the design. Cad and CAM are often now combined
as CAD/CAM to designate that both operations are often achieved by the
same computer program. The software version of the design,
itself, is capable of directing the machine operations.
CNC Motor Control Controlling is done via
an interface called the CNC Motor Control, or any controller
under any name that performs this function, and receives the directions
and routes them to the actual production machine so the design is
executed in real time. It is the hardware and the circuitry that
performs the commands dictated by the software program. In fact,
as a unit it often contains the computer that the software resides in.
However, the computer can be remote, or an integral part of the
machine, as may also be the motor control.
Machine Operations In this stage the
machine receives the instructions of the CAD/CAM setup via the CNC
Motor Control and dutifully carries them out to arrive at a
finished product.
History Of CNC Motor Control
At the beginning there was no such thing as CAD
or CAM as defined above. 1950s CNC Motor Control was
directed by paper tape readers which gave numerically accurate speed,
orientation, position and other data to a machine so as to perform
manufacturing functions. This allowed little or no human manual
operation or intervention. In the 1960s such machines had been
developed and had become popular and numerous. It was a
breakthrough which allowed multiple operations to occur simultaneously
on several planes, several surfaces, and via multiple tools and tool
changes. Further, accuracy and consistency was an additional
bonus.
The next step was achieved by the development of
a programming language that could be universally applied.
The language is referred to as APT, or Automatically Programmed Tools.
CAD and CAM software development came about and have further expanded
to include functions of each other. This means the initial work
also determines the operations the machine will have to go through to
arrive at a product. What is entailed is combining artistic and
design functions that are intelligently matched to machine savvy.
It is a strategic marriage which permits the artist to arrive at design
parameters that do not violate the capabilities of the machines
intended on executing those parameters.
During these same decades solid-state
technologies developed which also were adopted into the power product
field. The abilities of transistors and variations of this
technology were adapted toward the creation of electronic analogies to
transformers which could greatly expand motor applications. This
new technology made efficient and effective power use possible while
also providing a broader selection of resources for speed, torque
control, and a variety of other functions. Nowadays CNC Motor
Control is almost synonymous with
VFD drives.
However, with each change comes other necessary
change. The new drives created the need and also opportunity for
development of better, more compatible motors, and for motors with
capabilities not previously available. So, new motors were
evolved that would satisfy the electrical requirements now imposed by
the varieties of variable frequency drives, and by the new applications
which evolved around them.

It is difficult to do a quick search of the
internet without encountering an overwhelming array of applications for
CNC Motor Control units. An immediate list includes things
like milling machines, lathes, routers for wood and metal, automotive
manufacturing robots, manufacturing assembly machines, special saws of
all kinds, drills, engravers, forming machines, and the list continues.
They are even employed in the home hobby shop. Fully three
