Brushless Motor Control–The Brushless Motor

Brushless Motor Control bases itself on the fundamental design of the brushless motor.  They are DC motors and are synchronous.  The commutation system is electronically controlled.  Current, voltage, torque and speed are all related linearly.  The general category breaks down into two branches.  These are the stepper motor and the reluctance motor.  To understand a Brushless Motor Control one also has to grasp the basics on the motors they drive.  Stepper motors have already been described on the stepper motor control page.  Following is a description of the reluctance motor.

Brushless Motor Control–The Reluctance Motor Defined

The second type of motor commonly used with a Brushless Motor Control is known under a variety of names.  Four are variable reluctance motor, variable reluctance stepping motor, switched reluctance motor, and synchronous reluctance motor.  This motor employs induction to magnetize non-permanent poles.  Magnetic reluctance causes torque, which drives the motor.  There are certain characteristics necessary to making this reluctance work for the Brushless Motor Control.

Brushless Motor Control–The Reluctance Motor Described

A number of electromagnets are placed surrounding the rotor.  Projections are deliberately placed on both the stators (electromagnets) and the rotor.  These points are there to act as magnetic poles when energized.  Making the number of stator poles more than those on the rotor insures they will never align all at the same time.  This strategy also diminishes any torque ripple encountered.  Full alignment would result in a stable position with no generation of torque. 

Energizing a stator pole during Brushless Motor Control will cause the poles on both stator and rotor to try and reach an equilibrium where reluctance is reduced.  This is where the poles on both stator and rotor are most aligned (closest together).  This tendency is what brings about torque.  The Brushless Motor Controller must shift the electromagnetic energization from one electromagnet to the next in advance of the turning of the rotor so that the urge to come to equilibrium will continue and the motor will keep turning.  Essentially, the electromagnet poles pull on the points of the rotor and cause it to rotate. 

Brushless Motor Control–Reluctance Motor Variations

Variations of motors used include some which run with 3 phase AC.  There are dual-rotor versions said to provide more torque with less cost.  The switched reluctance version mentioned above is rather popular.  It is a form of stepper motor characterized by having fewer poles.  Its simplicity of design and construction makes it highly economical to make and sell.  The highest occurrence of application of an SRM is when rotors are maintained in a stationary position for extended periods.  The lack of brushes makes a Brushless Motor Control with its motor ideal in environments where explosive chemicals and flammable substances create high fire dangers.
