AC Motor Controls Defined

AC Motor Control is most narrowly defined as being a variable frequency drive dedicated to controlling speed and/or torque of AC motor operation.  But there is a second definition of AC Motor Control.  It has to do with ANY way of controlling functions in an AC motor.  This would then include the Variac, control transformers, AC drives, or any other version of controlling AC motor functions.  Technically, it would also include mechanical, non-electrical means of AC Motor Control. The term would cover any control strategy regardless of design, or even, in fact, any not yet invented.  For our purposes we will dwell only on those forms of AC Motor Control having to do with drives and variations of transformers.

AC Motor Control & Variacs

Variacs are toroidal transformers and are wired as autotransformers.  This means that they give no isolation since they are wired with primary and secondary becoming essentially one continuous winding.  The Variacs are used in AC Motor Control quite a lot, especially in repairing, testing, calibrating and experimenting actions.  This is because they are easily made as portable units.  Also, their variability is created by making a portion of winding exposed to a slider that allows instant manual adjustment of voltage output.  This readily available and fine adjustability makes them ideal in lab conditions.  They are often installed in panels because of their usefulness, accuracy, and efficiency.  It is uncommon, however, for them to be used to provide permanent voltage in any application of AC Motor Control.

AC Motor Control & VFDs

The VFD variable frequency drive is a product of solid-state technology.  They have become extremely common in AC Motor Control use.  While applicable with single phase motors, they are especially important in applications with 3 phase motor control.  One finds them in industrial situations because of their efficiency and applicability to 3 phase systems.  As well, versions of VFDs are great for AC Motor Controls in fluid pumping systems, HVAC systems, hoists, elevators and other moving equipment where real time accuracy, control and fine tuning can be a plus.  Most versions nowadays include connectivity to computer networks for the purposes of monitoring, control from remote locations, coordination with other motors and devices, statistical evaluation, and other technical and management operations.

AC Motor Control & Control Transformers

AC motors create issues in the power supply just by the very nature of transformer and motor construction.  When powering up, an AC motor draws the necessary power current.  When there is flux in an energized system it will resist fast build-ups or changes, thus acting somewhat as a form of regulation.  But in first powering up, the fields in the motor and the fields in the transformer have, as yet, no electromagnetic flux.  For the first 50 or so milliseconds this absence of electromagnetic flux allows the current coming into the transformer to swell well past the normal operating voltages.  This can create damage to the transformer, if not immediately, then over a period of use.  Additional repercussions may result because of other devices connected with the motor, such as solenoids and electronics.  A control transformer is made to withstand the momentary inrush of larger current while maintaining a steady output within necessary parameters to operate the motor and other attached devices.  It is especially useful where there are electromagnetic devices such as solenoids because they will only operate within a close tolerance of optimum power.  AC Motor Control using a control transformer solves these issues.
