The Gamut Of Motor Control

Motor Control is an area that perhaps best exemplifies the variety of new electric device demands and ways combinations of older and newer technologies are being employed to meet them.  These demands cover the range from economy of operation to exactitude of control.  Motor Control is a big issue in a variety of applications where motors are used.  In past times Motor Control took the form mainly of mechanical belts, chains, gears, and various differential devices.  With the advent of solid-state electronics and advances in the more traditional application of transformer technologies, motor control has become a very diverse and important  field.

Motor Control & Efficiency

Demands for energy have so increased that efficiency in power use is now a very big button.  Large numbers of new and/or growing applications in the industries, businesses and homes around the industrial nations of the world have forced the development of ways in improving efficiency.  The infrastructure in many areas is groaning under the pressure for more energy while resources to provide such energy is limited.  At up to nearly 70% power savings in many instances, Variable speed motor control and PWM motor control devices are a big item in today's market. 

Motor Control & Economy

Oil, natural gas, hydropower, coal, nuclear power, wind and solar all have either supply issues or environmental restrictions that demand limitation of availability.  Limited supply of available energy and energy resources has led to other, but related pressures.  Efficiency and economy are not the same, but are very related fields.  When there is scarcity there is opportunity for increases in prices.  Energy costs in pretty much all areas of energy-related products have skyrocketed.  As a result, any increase in efficiency is money right back into the pocket of the user.  It well behooves the discerning manufacturer to produce motors and other electrical products that use as little power as possible.  Franklin motor control and Baldor motor control devices are two fine examples of this forward thinking.

Motor Control Operational Parameters

While economy and efficiency have been pushed up, so has the ability of Motor Controls to meet exacting operational demands.  A list of the main demands would include things like:

Torque control – as found in H2O VFD drives and vector VFD drives.  In these cases immediate and complete access to torque can be very critical.  Maintenance of fast and responsive action to things like water back-pressures in pumping operations or the ability to hold 100% torque while not turning can be essential in hoists and other applications where loads must not move while motors are not turning.

Speed control – Of expanding concern is the need for motor speed control or motor RPM control during industrial or service operations.  The PWM motor control is common to this area of application.  The variac transformer is another.  It can be portable and allow non-standard voltages in testing or experimental operations on an instant's notice.

Precision starting, changing and stopping – In machine tool applications, this is an enormous need.  Exacting motions in these three areas are often crucial for good machining and manufacturing results.  The servo motor control used commonly in the automotive robotics and other robotics production areas is a great example of this.

Delivery of exact levels of power – Not only will this feature deliver a lot smoother service, but it can be quite mandatory for Motor Controls where there is a lot of starting and stopping involved.  Control transformers specialize in handling exact voltages in the secondary despite fluctuations in the primary, and they also allow automatic response to voltage drops incurred during normal starting sequences.  This must be handled especially when solenoids and other electromagnetic devices are used along with Motor Controls and motors.  Too much a fluctuation can interfere with the proper response of those devices.  (They may not kick in at all, be delayed, or quit functioning at inopportune moments where voltage levels preclude proper operation.)

Motor Control & Maintenance

The next area of Motor Control importance is a further contribution to economy.  This is because when Motor Controls are efficient and economical in power use they are also economical in the sense that they tend to last far longer and deliver more consistently.  This, in turn, cuts down maintenance and replacement costs.  When not being serviced as much they also save labor of replacement and losses from downtime.
